Tigo is Now Yas: Your Guide to the New Brand

Tanzania’s digital landscape just took its biggest leap forward in a decade. As of November 2024, the brand millions of us knew as Tigo Tanzania has officially transformed into Yas. This isn’t just a change of colors; it is the birth of a pan-African powerhouse designed to redefine how you connect, pay, and grow in the digital age.

Key Takeaways: The Tigo-to-Yas Transition

  • Brand Name: Tigo Tanzania is now Yas.
  • Financial Services: Tigo Pesa has been rebranded to Mixx by Yas.
  • Service Continuity: Your current SIM card, airtime balance, and Bando za Yas remain active. No swap is required.
  • Vision: A unified pan-African identity under Axian Telecom, focusing on high-speed 4G/5G and financial inclusion.
  • Ownership: Led by Axian Telecom Group in partnership with Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz.

Why did Tigo Tanzania rebrand to Yas?

The shift from Tigo to Yas marks a strategic alignment with Axian Telecom’s broader vision. By uniting operations across Tanzania, Madagascar, Senegal, and beyond under one cohesive brand, Yas is positioned to deliver a more “Digital Lifestyle” oriented experience.

Our analysis of the East African telecom market shows that consumers no longer just want a “phone company” they want a digital partner. Yas is the answer to that demand, bringing a fresh, energetic, and innovative spirit to every corner of the country, from the bustling streets of Dar es Salaam to the shores of Zanzibar.

What happened to Tigo Pesa? Introducing Mixx by Yas

If you use mobile money daily, you’ve likely noticed the new name: Mixx by Yas.

What happened to Tigo? It evolved. Mixx by Yas is built to be more than just a wallet; it’s a financial ecosystem. While the name has changed, the reliability has not. You can still pay your bills, send money to family in Arusha, or withdraw cash at any Wakala across the country just as you did before.

Quick Facts about Mixx by Yas:

  • Security: Your funds are as safe as ever, protected by the same robust encryption.
  • Accessibility: Use the same USSD codes or the updated Yas App.
  • Expansion: Expect new features like micro-loans and advanced savings tools tailored for the Tanzanian entrepreneur.

Do I need to buy a new SIM card or change my number?

The short answer: No.

One of the most common questions following the tigo rebrand is whether current users need to visit a shop for a new SIM. Your current Tigo Tanzania SIM card works perfectly on the Yas network. You will see “Yas” or “Yas TZ” on your phone screen where it used to say “Tigo.”

Editor’s Tip: If your phone still shows “Tigo,” a simple restart usually updates the carrier settings to the new Yas branding.

How does Yas support business growth in Tanzania?

Yas is positioning itself as a “Modern Authority” for SMEs and large corporations alike. Based on current search trends in East Africa, businesses are looking for more than just data; they need reliable connectivity solutions that scale.

High-Speed Connectivity

With massive investments in 4G and 5G infrastructure, Yas ensures that a tech startup in Mwanza has the same digital opportunities as a firm in London or Dubai.

Localized Support

We understand the Tanzanian market. Whether it’s Mixx by Yas integration for your e-commerce site or dedicated business bundles, the goal is to empower local talent.

Visualizing the Change: What to Look For

  • The Logo: A vibrant, modern design reflecting African energy.
  • The App: Look for the Yas App in the Play Store or App Store (it may have automatically updated from the Tigo app).
  • The Stores: Service centers in cities like Dodoma and Mbeya are getting a fresh, tech-forward makeover.

What this means for you

The transition to Yas is about more than just a new logo on a billboard. It means better regional connectivity, more innovative financial products through Mixx by Yas, and a network that is ready for the future of AI and high-speed data.

Your Digital Potential, Unlocked.

You don’t need to do anything to join the movement, you’re already part of it. Your plans, your balance, and your “Bando za Yas” are ready for you to use.
