Comedian, media personality and Co-Founder of Punchline Africa, Evans Bukuku has become one of the most influential figures in the rise of modern stand-up comedy in Tanzania. Widely dubbed the Godfather of Stand-Up Comedy in Tanzania, he has been actively performing stand-up comedy since 2009 while helping shape the industry into a respected creative and commercial platform.
As co-founder of Punchline Comedy Club, Evans established the first dedicated comedy club in East and Central Africa — a venue created specifically for the growth, mentorship and professional development of comedians and performers. Through the club’s free weekly Open Mic Nights held every Tuesday, hundreds of emerging comics, singers, poets and performers have been given a platform to develop their craft in front of live audiences.
Under his leadership, Punchline became one of East Africa’s leading comedy platforms, building spaces where comedians could perform consistently, grow professionally and connect beyond borders. Evans was among the first to bring major African comedy stars such as Basketmouth from Nigeria and Eric Omondi from Kenya to Tanzania, helping introduce international comedy collaborations to local audiences.
Beyond hosting international talent, Evans also opened doors for Tanzanian comedians to perform across Africa. Artists including Leonardo, Deo Gratius, Neila Manga and Dogo Pepe have performed in countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and South Sudan through platforms and relationships he helped establish.
Today, Evans Bukuku is also responsible for hosting Tanzania’s first international comedy festival, featuring comedians and performers from South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and Togo. His work continues to position stand-up comedy not only as entertainment, but as a cultural bridge that connects African stories, industries and audiences across the continent.
From Tanzania to stages across Africa, Evans Bukuku continues to prove that African comedy deserves a place on the global stage. Africa shows up.
