A blocked Yas SIM card stops everything at once: no calls, no SMS, no mobile data, and no access to Mixx by Yas. The good news is that nearly every blocked Yas line can be restored, and in most cases it takes only a few minutes once you know exactly which type of block you are dealing with. Below we set out the complete, step-by-step process for diagnosing the problem, retrieving your PUK code, unblocking the SIM safely, and preventing it from happening again.

What "Blocked" Actually Means on a Yas SIM

The single most common mistake people make is treating every block as the same problem. It is not. A Yas SIM can be blocked at two completely different levels, and each has a different fix.

The first level is a PIN/PUK block on the SIM itself. This is the classic case: you (or someone else) entered the wrong SIM PIN three times in a row, and the SIM locked itself as a security measure. The phone then displays a request for a PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code. This is handled entirely from your handset and does not require a new SIM.

The second level is a network or account block applied by Yas. Here the SIM is fine, but the line has been suspended on the carrier’s side  typically because of a reported lost or stolen device, suspected fraud, an unpaid device-financing balance, prolonged inactivity, or incomplete registration. This block can only be lifted by Yas, not from your handset.

How to Identify a PIN/PUK Block

When the SIM itself is locked, the signs are unmistakable. After you switch on the phone or reinsert the SIM, the screen prompts you to enter the PUK code rather than the usual PIN. Some devices display messages such as “SIM locked,” “PUK required,” or “Enter PUK to unblock.” At this point the SIM will not connect to the Yas network at all, and even emergency-only mode may be the only thing available.

This block is triggered by three consecutive incorrect SIM PIN entries. It is not a fault and it is not permanent  provided you use the correct PUK and do not exhaust your attempts.

Retrieving Your Yas PUK Code

The PUK is an eight-digit code unique to your SIM. There are several reliable ways to obtain it.

Check the original SIM pack. When you first bought your Yas SIM, the PUK was printed on the plastic card holder the SIM was attached to, usually beneath a scratch panel alongside the default PIN. If you kept the packaging, this is the fastest route.

Use Yas self-care via USSD. Call Yas Customer Care. Dial 100 from a Yas line, or call the Yas customer care line from any phone. An agent will verify your identity and be ready with the registered owner’s full name, ID details, and information about the line  and will then issue your PUK over the phone. For security, only the registered line holder can make this request.

Visit a Yas shop. If you have lost the packaging and cannot get through by phone, visit any Yas service centre with a valid government-issued ID matching the registration. Staff can confirm ownership and provide the PUK or arrange a SIM replacement on the spot.

Entering the PUK and Unblocking the SIM

Once you have the correct PUK, the unblock itself is quick:

  1. When the phone prompts for the PUK, type the eight-digit code carefully.
  2. The phone will then ask you to set a new SIM PIN. Choose a four-to-eight-digit number you will remember but that others cannot guess to avoid obvious sequences and your date of birth.
  3. Confirm the new PIN. The SIM will register on the Yas network within seconds, and your calls, SMS, data, and Mixx by Yas wallet will all return.

One warning deserves emphasis above all others: you have a strictly limited number of PUK attempts, normally ten. Each incorrect entry burns one attempt. If you exhaust all of them, the SIM is permanently and irreversibly disabled and no PUK on earth will revive it. If you are unsure of the code, stop and retrieve it from Yas rather than guessing.

Unblocking a Network or Account-Level Block

If your phone shows “SIM rejected,” “No service,” “Not registered on network,” or simply refuses to connect despite never asking for a PUK, the block is on Yas’s side. Handset tricks will not help here; the resolution is administrative.

Confirm registration status. Tanzanian regulations require every SIM to be registered and biometrically verified. An unregistered or incompletely registered line will be blocked from service. If this is the cause, you must complete or re-verify registration at a Yas shop with your ID.

Settle any outstanding balance. Yas device-financing plans are repaid daily through Mixx by Yas, and missed payments can result in a device or line lock. Clearing the balance through your Mixx by Yas account typically restores service.

Report and resolve lost/stolen blocks. If the line was suspended after a lost-or-stolen report, only the registered owner can reactivate it after identity verification.

Contact Yas directly. Dial 100 for customer care, use the live-chat and support options on the official Yas website and app, or visit a service centre. After verifying your identity and resolving the underlying cause, Yas will lift the block.

When You Need a Replacement SIM

A replacement (SIM swap) is the correct path in three situations: the SIM is physically damaged or worn and no longer reads correctly; the PUK attempts have been exhausted and the SIM is permanently dead; or the SIM has been lost or stolen. In every case, visit a Yas shop with valid ID matching the registered owner. Yas will issue a new SIM tied to your existing number, so you keep your line, contacts can still reach you, and your Mixx by Yas wallet remains intact once the new SIM is activated.

Quick Troubleshooting Before You Panic

Not every connection problem is a true block. Before assuming the worst, try these basics, which resolve a surprising share of “blocked” reports:

  • Restart the phone. A simple reboot clears temporary network glitches that can mimic a block.

  • Record your PUK somewhere safe. Photograph the SIM pack and store it securely the day you buy the SIM.
  • Disable the SIM PIN if you do not need it. If a PIN prompt is not protecting anything valuable for you, turning it off in your phone settings removes the entire risk of a three-strikes lockout  though leaving it on adds genuine security if your phone is lost.
  • Keep your registration current. Ensure your Yas SIM is fully registered under your own verified ID so the line is never suspended for compliance reasons.
  • Stay on top of device-financing payments. If you bought a handset on a Yas daily plan, fund your Mixx by Yas account so automatic repayments never fail and trigger a lock.
  • Use the SIM regularly. Periodic activity prevents inactivity-based deactivation.

    – Defaulting can also result in debt collection by engaging a debt collector company
    where your personal information will be shared for recovery.
    – Porting your phone number to another network before full payment is default.
  6.  Device Ownership: YAS owns the device until full payment.
  7.  Non-Portability: You cannot port the device’s number until full payment.
  8.  Liability: You are responsible for any damages caused while the device is in your
    possession.
  9.  Governing Law: Tanzanian law applies.
  10.  Dispute Resolution: Disputes will be resolved in Tanzanian courts.
  11.  Information: Honora Tanzania can share your information with Mixx By Yas and debt
    collectors in case of default for recovering process.
  12.  Device lock: Honora Tanzania can lock the device in case of nonpayment.
  13.  Amendments: Honora Tanzania can change these terms.
  14.  Acceptance: By signing, you agree to these terms.
