Faster downloads, smoother video calls, and lag free gaming all depend on one thing: the network behind your phone. Yas Tanzania has been rolling out 5G across the country, and many users want to know one simple thing before they upgrade their phone or router. Is 5G available where I live? This guide explains where Yas 5G has reached, what speeds to expect, and how to check whether your area is covered.

What Is Yas 5G and Why It Matters

5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology. Compared with 4G, it delivers much higher speeds and far lower latency, which is the short delay between your device asking for something and the network responding. In practice, that means downloads that finish in seconds, video that starts without buffering, and online games that feel responsive. For homes and small businesses, a 5G connection can rival entry level fibre, which makes it a strong option where wired internet is not available.

Where Is Yas 5G Available?

Yas has focused its 5G rollout on the areas with the highest demand first, which means major cities and commercial centres. As of 2026, Yas 5G is live in key cities including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza, with coverage expanding into more towns and neighbourhoods over time.

Because 5G is still growing, availability can differ from one part of a city to another. A neighbourhood in central Dar es Salaam may have full 5G while an outer suburb is still on 4G for now. This is normal during a rollout, and Yas continues to add 5G sites. For the most accurate picture of your exact street, always confirm using the official coverage tools and customer care described below.

Even where 5G has not yet arrived, Yas 4G LTE reaches over 95% of the population, so you stay connected on a fast network in the meantime.

Yas Network Coverage by the Numbers

Yas has invested heavily in building one of the strongest networks in the country. Here is what stands behind the coverage:

Measure Feagure
Network sites More than 4,800
Population coverage Over 95%
Network investment More than TZS 1 Trillion
Independent recognition Fastest mobile network in Tanzania for three consecutive years (Ookla)

This scale is why Yas has roughly a thousand more network sites than its closest competitor. You can read the full story in our article on how Yas Tanzania reached 95% coverage.

How to Check If 5G Is Available in Your Area

Before you commit to a 5G phone or router, confirm coverage with these steps:

  1. Check your device. Only 5G capable phones and routers can connect to 5G. If your device is 4G only, you will not see a 5G signal even in a covered area.
  2. Look at your signal indicator. In a covered area, a 5G phone with a Yas 5G SIM will show a 5G icon in the status bar once 5G is switched on in your network settings.
  3. Use the Yas coverage map. Visit the Yas website to check the latest coverage information for your location.
  4. Contact Yas customer care. If you are unsure, call or message Yas support and ask whether 5G is live at your specific address. This is the surest way to confirm before you buy.

What You Need to Connect to Yas 5G

To use Yas 5G, you need three things: a 5G capable device, a Yas 5G SIM, and 5G coverage in your area. Popular options include:

Yas 5G for Home Internet

One of the biggest benefits of 5G is fixed wireless home internet. Instead of laying cables, a 5G router turns the mobile signal into a home WiFi network that can support many devices at once. Yas offers a 4G/5G home plan with unlimited data starting from 70,000 TZS, and a fibre option for areas where wired internet is available. Compare them on the Yas home plans page, and see our roundup of the best WiFi routers in Tanzania to choose the right device.
